Op-Ed Column by Western Reserve Partners
Managing Director Mark Filippell featured in
Cleveland Plain Dealer

January 11, 2009

The January 11, 2009 Opinion section of the Cleveland Plain Dealer newspaper featured a column written by Western Reserve Partners LLC Managing Director Mark Filippell. Entitled Let’s Build a Bridge to Physical, Civic Renewal, the column addresses the problems facing Cleveland’s need to replace its major downtown bridge in a timely manner.

Mr. Filippell writes as both a concerned Cleveland citizen and as an engineering enthusiast about the necessity to build a new I90/I71 bridge using unconventional, “emergency” construction priority scheduling. He draws a comparison to the I-35W Bridge in Minneapolis to show how rapidly a new 10-lane structure could be completed.

He reasons that quick build would take advantage of low materials costs, making the project economical for the taxpayer. Mr. Filippell’s article concludes:

“There is absolutely no question that a new 10-lane Inner Belt Bridge can be economically and expeditiously completed. Moreover, emergency bridge construction would remedy more than just our transportation problem. It would also reinvigorate Cleveland’s can-do spirit with a major, tangible civic success.”
